Open Questions on Open Weights

Introduction

This post was submitted by a SAIRC member either as a recommended read or student-created post. All credit remains with the original author.

A deliberately unresolved walk through the open-weights debate, taking seriously both the freedom argument (users owning their models rather than renting them from corporations) and the misuse argument (criminal applications, bioterrorism). The author's conclusion is more political than technical: preemptive bans are not viable, society will respond after something goes wrong, and so immediate action on this particular front is not where effort should go.
