More than a decade ago, immersed in research on competency-based education, I read Leaders of Their Own Learning, a comprehensive guide to designing student-centered assessments. The authors make a distinction between 'learning goals' and 'learning tasks.' Goals 'should describe what students will learn as a result of a lesson, learning experience, or unit of study, not what they will do as the task.'
